Paul Rapoza, Sensei Rapoza Sensei began his aikido training in 1990. He met his first teacher William Gleason Sensei, founder of Shobu Aikido of Boston, at the Zen Mountain Monastery in Mount Tremper New York. He had enrolled in an “Aikido & Zen” retreat. Rapoza Sensei studied with Gleason Sensei until 1997. His present teacher is Yoshinobu Takeda Shihan, founder of Shonan Aikido Renmei and Aikido Kenkyukai International. Rapoza Sensei first met Takeda Sensei in 1991 on a trip to Japan. He has since visited several times and received the rank of sandan (3rd degree) from Takeda Sensei. . Learning Aikido Aikido is learned through the direct transmission from teacher to student. By taking ukemi from the teacher and working with your partner the student develops there own hara (center), understanding and judgment. At Cape Cod Aikido we learn aikido by taking ukemi. Ukemi is the art of receiving techniques and proper falling. It is learning self preservation without being defensive. As is true with aikido in general, ukemi can only be learned by experience. The more ukemi a student takes the better the students ukemi will be and the better their aikido will be. Nage or one who throws is actually the art of giving. Nage gives a technique or throw to uke who receives the technique and falls in the most appropriate manner. Both uke and nage are giving and receiving in the course of a single technique. They are offering their energy to their partner to work with and polish themselves. A proper attitude is also essential to learning Aikido. The Student’s practice is not only for one’s own benefit but also for the benefit of your partners and the dojo as a whole. |
