Aikido Aikido is a martial art developed in the early 1900’s by Morihei Ueshiba. Ueshiba Sensei’s vision was to unite the world through the practice of aikido. As a young man he studied various martial arts, both empty handed and weapon forms. When we study aikido we learn to harmonize with our partner rather than counter attack. Instead of trying to manipulate or overpower our partner we use our ki (energy) to gather our partner together with us so we are moving together as one. As aikido students develop they internalize the art, they become aikido. It is a way of learning about and finding one’s true self. The study of aikido is not for building oneself up in a physically powerful way, but stripping away the false self images we all have. |
